Williamsport Data Backups and Computer Security
:: Sun, Jul 26 2009
We recently took on a new business client for network administration in Williamsport. Our first day in we were alarmed to see some issues we encounter quite often so we thought we might highlight them here for our readers to ensure that these key points are not missed. I know business owners hear this all the time, but we hope it sticks with a few.
Data is Everything
Data backup issues are too common. Rule #1 is protect your data. Everything else is irrelevant if you don’t have a solid data backup that is consistent, reliable, and complete. Make sure you have a method to take the data offsite, triple check that you are backing up each and every file and folder you should be, and ensure that you have sufficient archival storage to allow for at least a weeks worth of data storage. The storage media is cheap compared to the cost of the data loss so there is no real excuse for not having your data backed up every which way possible.
Security is Essential
Far too often we walk into networks where the business owner’s data is completely exposed to employees at all levels. We even see it sometimes where the entire C drive of the owner’s pc is shared on a workgroup. That means ANY and ALL users can read, edit, and delete key files. Most often we see a business with a business network and domain server setup. This company in Willamsport we provide computer service for had the server setup and a properly functioning domain except for that fact that the owner’s My Documents was stored on the network and there were no permissions settings to prevent any other user on the network from opening his documents and reading, deleting, or editing them.
What? No Virus Protection
We have trouble understanding a business network that lacks virus protection. AVG and Kaspersky price their business anti-virus products so low (and they are 2 of the best) that is not difficult for even the tightest budgets to afford using an anti-virus solution on every pc. Please check that your virus protection is up to date and that you even have it on each pc in your network.
We only hope this article finds some businesses in the Central PA area and they take the time to make sure these common issues DO NOT exist in their network.
